Testimonials from Grow A Farmer Participants:
Here is what Gemael Melanson, a participant in the 2013 Apprenticeship Program has to say about Grow A Farmer:
“I discovered the Grow a Farmer program and was drawn to its dual approach to on-farm education: hands-on and formal. Through my involvement, I ended up apprenticing with Alyson Chisholm and Will Pedersen at Windy Hill Farm, NB, growing organic vegetables to sell at the Dieppe market and through a CSA program. By partaking in all of the farm’s activities, and learning from their expertise, I learned more than I would have ever thought: from managing soil, weed and insect to marketing products, irrigating crops, dealing with livestock and much more.”
Will Pedersen and Alyson Chisholm, of Windy Hill Farm/Host & Mentor Farm for the Grow A Farmer Programs shared:
“We hosted our first Grow A Farmer apprentice at Windy Hill Farm (McKee’s Mills, NB) in 2013 and found the experience very rewarding and informative for us as teachers and mentors. The curriculum guide was developed by farmers and proved to be very informative and detailed in the topics covered and definitely helped us to deliver a more comprehensive learning experience for our apprentice. We feel that the program goes way beyond most farm apprenticeships in preparing the apprentice to run a farm business of their own. We love farming and the Grow A Farmer program helps us to pass on this love of farming to a new generation of farmers. The detailed on-farm instruction and experience together with the seminars and farm tours provided by ACORN really provide a good grounding in all aspects of running a small farm as well as a good introduction to different scales and types of agricultural production practices. The program has helped us to become better teachers as well as providing extra help from an apprentice with a real interest in farming as a career.”
